As the results of comprehensive research on California’s school finance and governance systems are made public (the Getting Down to Facts project), many Californians may wonder how school finance relates to their lives and the everyday operations of the state’s schools.
Why does school finance matter, to whom, and in what ways?
EdSource has invited commentary on these questions from individuals who deal with matters of school finance regularly and who see them through different lenses.
Peter Schrag is a contributing editor for the Sacramento Bee and has written extensively on school finance issues in California, including a book on finance reform issues, Final Test: the Battle for Adequacy in America’s Schools (2003).
Lawrence O. Picus is a professor at the University of Southern California’s Rossier School and Education and director of the Center for Research in Education Finance (CREF). Picus has consulted extensively on school finance issues with more than 20 states and is a past president of the American Education Finance Association.
